Lives across the world have changed and continue to change amidst this incredible pandemic we are facing! Our day-to-day lives of 2 weeks ago are drastically different now as we work together to navigate through the craziness and the ever changing environments we are in currently.
It is crazy to even think one week ago today we were planned to be arriving back home to Sacramento following a week long trip to our then future home of Saint Maarten. A week prior to that we would be kissing our littles goodbye just before jumping on a red-eye flight with great ambition and enthusiasm for all the future had in store for our family. Itinerary in hand for all we wanted to accomplish while away, excitement to truly dive into what this island life could be and full of great hope for the future… we were ready to go!
News began to spread about the impact the COVID-19 was having around the world. At this point it was known it was serious, however, it was primarily impacting cruise ships. The US cases of the coronavirus were still in the low hundreds and Italy was beginning to discuss lockdowns of the northern part of the country. Darren and I began discussing our upcoming trip and over the next couple of days watched as the reality of this virus became more and more serious. We made the decision to cancel our trip to the island of St. Maarten for the following week. Travel was still taking place internationally, however, we didn’t want to take the risk of getting to the island and then a week later not being able to return. Funny thing is, within a week’s time, our return flight was cancelled reinforcing the fact that we had made the right decision to stay home.
It seems as if things have escalated ten fold from there… schools are closed for the remainder of the year, individuals are ordered to “shelter in place” for indefinite periods of time, employees are losing jobs and small businesses fight to stay alive. Toilet paper and basic needs are nowhere to be found within 10 minutes of stores opening across the country and those deemed “essential workers” are putting their health and safety on the line each and every day as they continue to serve and protect others.
Despite the chaos that is our new normal, we have time to stop and say hello to our neighbors instead of a quick wave in passing. We have the time to reach out to those we care about and simply check in. We are adjusting to home schooling our kiddos yet are relieved from the stress of rushing them off to school in the morning, running from work to picking them up for activities in the afternoon or cramming in homework, dinner, chores and showers before 9pm. We have the opportunity to engage in conversation with our littles and help them navigate their feelings around all that is transpiring around them. It is easy to forget in our own daily struggles that our littles are feeling the impact as well. They worry about never seeing their teachers again or their friends. We take walks through the neighborhood for some reprieve of being cooped up indoors and they worry about catching “the coronavirus” from the parks they are used to running around yet can’t touch currently.
We are all dealing with our own struggles and sense of loss surrounding this pandemic. From loss of normalcy, fear of uncertainty, forced isolation, economic turmoil and loss of safety… it is a lot to process. I am sure the emotions will come in waves, at least that has been my experience thus far. As I write this, I am in a state of sadness and feeling defeated on the day. The gravity of everything we have been planning and working towards over the course of the past 8 months coming to a halt for now makes me emotional. The kid’s reaction of “we aren’t moving to Saint Maarten” and the pain in their faces also makes me sad and disappointed. The daily fight to keep our businesses alive and thriving throughout the uncertain times is exhausting and straining. All that being said, I can’t control the situation but I can control how I respond to the situation.
I choose to have faith that we will all get through this! We will have great compassion and kindness throughout all the ups and downs. The world will be a better place on the other side of this because we will have all triumphed together.
Personally, the Flip the Script Family will embark on a journey that will truly inspire so many others… it may just be delayed from our original timeline.
