A visit to Harrison’s Cave has been on our list of places to see since arriving on the island over a year ago. We have all been to the cave previously, however, the kiddos were too young to remember those previous visits. The site was under renovation for part of last year as well so we were excited to see the updates.
In 1981, Harrison’s Cave was officially opened to the public in Barbados. The Boyce Tunnel, named after equipment operator Noel Boyce who broke ground to open the cave’s natural passageways, leads to the entrance of the cave. Beyond this point, Harrison’s Cave is a massive stream cave system that is at least 2.3 kilometres long. Interior temperature is an average 27 degrees Celsius and its largest cavern, the Great Hall measures 15 metres high. Harrison’s Cave is considered an active cave as it carries water, and it is very much alive as its stalagmites are still growing albeit by less than the thickness of a piece of paper each year; but that’s very fast in geological terms.
We were told that by summer of 2022 there will be walking tours being introduced once again as well as zip lining adventures for you real adventurers out there. Be sure to say hi if you see us on one of those tours with you this summer as we cannot wait to indulge.
Simply put…Barbados has a lot more to offer than just beautiful beaches and rum punch. We highly suggest Harrisons cave and many of the locations in land as well. For 166 square miles, it is quite phenomenal what this little rock in the Atlantic has to offer.
Thanks for watching!!
