Facing the Scars Post Surgery

Today marks a significant moment and another milestone in my breast cancer journey—a post-op appointment where the bandages will finally be removed, revealing the scars left behind by surgery. As I prepare for this moment, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions—nervousness, apprehension, but also a glimmer of hope. These scars, physical reminders of the battle I’ve faced, carry with them a deeper meaning—one of healing, resilience, and strength.

The thought of seeing my scars for the first time fills me with uncertainty. Will they be as prominent as I fear and what the doctors have prepared me for? Will they forever serve as a constant reminder of the journey I’ve endured? These questions swirl in my mind, but amidst the uncertainty, there’s a flicker of determination—a resolve to embrace whatever lies ahead with courage and grace as we have done through each phase of this journey.

In the midst of my apprehension, I’m reminded of the importance of reframing these scars as symbols of healing and strength. They are not marks of defeat, but rather badges of honor—a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Each scar tells a story of courage, of battles fought and victories won, and serves as a reminder of the incredible journey I’ve embarked on… more importantly a journey WE have embarked on as this has never been something I have done alone. Similarly, our scars are not flaws to be hidden, but rather aspects of ourselves to be celebrated. They are a part of who we are—a symbol of our resilience and the beauty that emerges from adversity.

As I prepare to face my scars, I do so with a newfound sense of purpose and resilience. We are emerging stronger on the other side as we vowed to do from the beginning. I read this today, “Scars are the healed wounds of yesterday that leave behind a story of trial and of healing that forms you as a person”.

Thank you for being a part of our story! These healed wounds are simply a reminder of the incredible strength that resides within myself and my beautiful family… through the help and support of a worldwide community that has poured into us through love and prayer.
